Our Mission
To empower students to monitor and own their learning.
To make clear what is expected, how they're doing and why.
To offer a new way of thinking about grades.
Our Core Values
Impact
We believe education holds immense potential to transform the social and academic lives of children everywhere. We are committed to eradicating disparities in schools by championing student-centered, empowering practices that help every child feel seen, valued, and connected to their community.
Quality
We hold ourselves to the highest standards, designing tools that empower teachers and students to thrive. We listen to our users, improve continuously, and focus on details so that educators can focus on what matters most: building communities of engaging, self-directed genuine learning.
Purpose
We are a company that seeks first and foremost to provide a social good, to improve the field of education. Our financial resources fuel innovation and honor our team's commitments, but financial gain is not our primary goal. Our ultimate bottom line is the impact we are able to occasion in classrooms that use our tools.

We see the gradebook a little differently. As a tool, shared by students, to empower learning
The Team
With 25 years of experience in education, primarily with curricular programs, Jeremy loves helping teachers achieve their goals. His reverence for educators and their craft is lifelong and palpable. As he heard educators talk about implementing standards-based grading, he sought to be a part of the movement. Perhaps his old skateboarding days (which he has traded for safer golfing) instilled a spirit of progressive rebellion. He loves now supporting the educator-centered strategy of Learning Portrait®, seeing how it helps students own their learning while supporting a liberating way of teaching.
While product is important, even more important is the process - and the people. While we have varied backgrounds and varied skills, we have a shared vision. And we think that makes us a great team. - Learning Portrait

Jeff taught high school math for 35 years, every year looking at ways to get better (he’s read over 350 books about education!). He started using standards-based grading in 2012. Suddenly, students stopped asking about improving grades and started asking about how to learn specific topics. He was hooked. Jeff soon began having students rate themselves using an early version of Learning Portrait®. He now loves working with teachers on improving their craft and guiding the direction of Learning Portrait. Jeff is also an actor in a local community theatre, a director of high school theatre, a proud father of four, and a fan of golfing.
Learning Portrait is what David was built to do. He has spent his career working to empower students as genuine learners. His career includes 13 years in the classroom and 15 years as both a school and district administrator. His work has included teaching, developing systems of support in districts, building effective teams of teachers, curricular leadership and instructional coaching. A consistent theme throughout has been David's quest for students to feel seen and heard, allowing them to blossom intellectually, creatively and emotionally. A teacher at heart, David, above all, enjoys learning, authentic connection with others and purposeful work. He feels incredibly lucky to be leading Learning Portrait, where all three of these are at play all the time. David is also a husband and a father of three - roles in which all these three elements of joy are also at play every day!

Annie Rimbach
User Experience Advisor
Annie Rimbach has a rich background in UI/UX, user research, and product strategy. She is currently the Director of Product Design at Credo Health, while also supporting Learning Portrait. Before diving into design, Annie had a career in music as an orchestra librarian, where she honed her organizational and creative skills. She has a passion for creating intuitive user experiences. If you like the ease of use, the flexibility, and the intuitive nature of Learning Portrait, then you have Annie to thank for it.

Joanie spent her 35-year career as both a teacher and an administrator. Her ultimate goal was to create spaces where educators and students could show up as their full authentic selves and feel a true sense of belonging. She always designated a significant amount of time for her learners to reflect on their educational experiences. It was during those times of self-reflection that the most meaningful feedback surfaced. Since the late 1980s, she has pushed herself to remain innovative and creative in her pedagogy. She’s facilitated various types of professional development and has co-authored two books, primarily to remind teachers and students how to remain in joy with learning. It is only fitting that she found herself enthusiastically accepting the invitation to be a part of Learning Portrait. She plans to continue to pay forward all she’s learned by supporting and empowering educators through their next chapter of teaching adventures.

Jason has always been driven by curiosity, specifically, how technology can take something complicated and make it feel simple, intuitive, and empowering. Always imagining solutions that truly serve their users, Jason is fascinated by the way a well-designed tool can transform someone’s entire experience, removing barriers and enabling people to move through their work with confidence. This mindset is at the core of his leadership.
After graduating from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Jason began in Software Quality Assurance before moving into project management, eventually becoming Lead Project Manager, Software Architect, and now, Chief Operations Officer at Counterpart. It is from this role that Jason acts as the technical lead for Learning Portrait. His progression through nearly every stage of the software development process gives him a deep understanding of how thoughtful, human-centered technology comes to life.
With family members who are educators, Jason has seen firsthand the challenges teachers face and the impact the right tools can have on both students and classrooms. Jason is energized by the opportunity to build tools that help students better understand themselves and provide teachers with meaningful insights into their classrooms. Learning Portrait’s role in strengthening confidence and connection in the learning environment aligns with Jason’s belief that the right technology can bring out the best in people.

Sophie Haydar
UX/UI Lead Designer, UX/UI Designer, Counterpart

Sophie is drawn to technology because of the emotions it can create. She’s deeply aware of how a poorly designed product can frustrate and alienate, while a thoughtful one can make people feel understood and at ease. That sensitivity to how design shapes our interaction and everyday experiences guides her work and inspired her to pursue a B.S. in User Experience Design at Purdue University.
Since graduating in 2023, Sophie has focused on designing with intention and empathy. She’s passionate about understanding how people think, what they need, and how technology can support them without becoming a barrier. Alongside her work at Counterpart, she serves as the UX/UI Chair for Indy Design Week, helping create educational opportunities that support lifelong learning throughout Central Indiana.
Through her work supporting Learning Portrait, Sophie has had the opportunity to reimagine what the learning experience can be. Helping students better understand themselves and giving teachers tools to tailor learning to individual needs has been central to her contributions. She’s proud to be part of a product that centers student voice and supports classrooms where every learner feels seen, supported, and empowered.
Kim’s interest in technology grew from her experience in healthcare, where she often became the person colleagues turned to when systems needed deciphering or workflows needed improvement. She saw firsthand how the right tools could reduce stress, increase clarity, and support people in moments when accuracy and compassion mattered most. That perspective continues to shape her thoughtful, user-first approach to quality and testing.
Before joining Counterpart in 2020, Kim spent years working across hospital administration, dialysis care, and hospice case management. As a BSN, MBA, she also served as a superuser and tester of major electronic medical record platforms, including Cerner, Meditech, and Epic. Her blend of clinical experience and technical fluency gives her a grounded understanding of what people truly need from the software they rely on every day.
Kim is especially passionate about her work supporting Learning Portrait. With close family members in education, she understands the day-to-day realities educators navigate and the importance of tools that truly support their work. Contributing to a platform that helps educators better understand their learners and helps students better understand themselves feels like a natural extension of her commitment to human-centered, purpose-driven technology.
